Kerala Flood an experience – I

A moment of time comes when natures calls one to come close experience the subtle duality of its existence one that gives life, nourishment and other that has the power to destroy

Maybe the journey to Kerala this year was a calling for me to experience its beauty as well as experience the power of water in all its devasting powers. I had landed from Munnar to Aluva on 14th of August 2018. Even on the way at Aanaveratti from Munnar we got saved by HIS grace from a major landslide. Even on the way there was news that Mattupatti Dam has been opened. At night in Aluva there was news everywhere that Dams are reaching a dangerous levels and Idukki dams will be opened.

Half the day on 15th August2018 the news contained information of the dam gates 1,2 and 3 are being opened. Post the half day the power tripped or was switched off. We knew things are moving into a not very suitable manner.

At night  around 2 AM I

could sense some change in the energy of the atmosphere. Sat for a moment of time and then the feeling of a surge came within me, wanted to wake up people around me, but waited for it was not very intense. At around 4 AM a call came from outside and we were ready within a short period of time to move out of the house.

Insects and spiders taking protection

As we came out of house I could sense the water surge within me and on the

surrounding the water was nearly 15 feet away around 3-4 inches in height. The water had risen from over 400 metres away from periyar to reach height nearing the house. My family was taken to a known house in the vicinity at a higher plane some 800 metres away. It was a temporary place for within 5 hours that is by 10 AM the water reached very close to the place. Thus, we shifted the family at a higher plane in a known relatives place. The whole area around us was flooded.

The water level was nearly 18 inches at the initial areas while reaching upto 7 to 8 feet in the deeper areas while at the edges was nearing 12 feet plus.

The calamity was still not over, for the water was still rising and animals, insects, scorpions and snakes were running here and there to find a place to survive.

For many houses the buildings were totally submerged and where under pressure from the flowing water. It was a struggle to walk with the force. Swimming was the resource needed to handle the Fiber Boat we had to rescue people

People were so attached with the belongings that they were not even ready to let go of the house which was nearly flooded untill the very last moment, where the fear of loneliness, death became part of life. There I was able to find lot of people and younger generation who were more than ready to help everyone in whatever manner they were able to do. Even with the worst of calamity in the form of water was filling the houses people were still were ready to smile and were friendly. Many houses the ladies were more than welcome to provide all the workers with Kattan-Kappi (Black coffee) frequently which was quite refreshing.

It was not a easy task to bring people through the heavy waters on a fiber boat(vanji) but it was a beautiful experience that allowed one to connect to the water energy as well as vast human emotional experience during the phase. The people were adjudsted in Rogationist, kunnumpuram aluva desom or at SFS vidyashram.

The second largest assignment was procurement of food material for the people who were given space in the Rogationist, kunnumpuram aluva desom or at SFS vidyashram or at other shelter places. Third was to gain access to clothings and dressings for them including medicines for many. The beauty I loved was young people becoming team leaders while handling tasks whiich was new to them but allowed them to blossom and grow and evolve guiding others to expand on the path.

Each house on a higher platform became a shelter home for many. The house we stayed was of a relative was having nearly forty people. The Amma who used to live there used to cook for all of us with a smiling face, not a moment of rest from early morning 5.30 am till 11:30pm she was tirelessly working, yes support was there for many people were but mostly it was her all the way. My humble pranams to all such mothers who were tirelessly serving everyone selflessly and in the most humble manner.

The water remained static in most of the places and we used to regularly go and check if the water has depleted. In most of the places it was neck level and few places more than ten feet. We were very sure that the stagnant water would have caused immense damage to the foundations of most of the houses.

The highway was flooded including the Aluva Manapuram Mahadevam Kshetram was immersed. It was sad state for most of places were flooded with shops filled with water. Most of the cars or buses that were trying to go through the water on the highway stopped due to water filling the engine.

On the way we were to procure food materials and medicines for people staying at shelter homes. It was a tiring effort yet the smiles of the people gave the contentment that was sufficient for us to keep moving on the same path.

By the morning of 20th August 2018 the water levels starting receding and then the major issues cropped up. The issue was the mud and dirt left by the receding waters in the houses and dirtying the wells as well.

…….Contd.
